Chapter Officials’ Meeting
14 Dec 09

Present for the meeting:

      President: Rhet Turnbull
      Vice President: Nick Kozdras
      Treasurer: Jeff Blank
Liaison to Liaison Officers: TAD Draper
      Secretary:   Ed Yong

 Location: USSTRATCOM Cafeteria

Agenda: Quarterly Meeting

Meeting Called to Order: 0745

 Old Business:  No old business.

New Business:  The snow and ice delayed the original 0715 start time.  Pretty bare bones even at 0745.

1.       Rhet getting the Facebook and Twitter accounts in line for chapter use.  The goal is to reach out to younger grads who are more familiar with these types of communication methods.

2.       Rhet also contacting the main AOG for help with regular US Postal Service type mailings to reach grads in the local area (NE and western IA).

3.   TAD going to contact the parents’ club about the All Academies Ball.  This year it will be held in Lincoln.  TAD to get details and send.

4.       Looking for a recommendation for a third high school to receive the chapter’s Leader of Character award.  At present, the award is at Bellevue East and Papillion La Vista.

5.       Future meetings: Monthly socials (next one starts in Jan 2010), quarterly officials’ meeting (officials are at USSTRATCOM…morning cafeteria meet or Saturday breakfast somewhere), Ops AF summer meeting (will need Ops AF info from USAFA), and the All Members meeting (keep in Nov or move to a different time of year).

6.       “Boot Camp” knowledge for candidates.  We have a draft.  TAD’s made contacts with the main AOG, but it does not appear that there are any kinds of formal set ups.  We may be pioneering this kind of effort.

7.       Men’s gymnastics coming to Lincoln on 6 Feb 2010.  It is a four way meet (USAFA, NE, Illinois, and Ohio State).

8.       Rhet may give a Social Media 101 discussion at the next lunch social.  Social Media 101 is about making use of the various communications methods available on the internet such as Facebook and Twitter.

9.       Rhet to contact other service academy chapter reps for potential joint activities.

10.  TAD to get the announcement of the election results out to make it official (Rhet as president and Jeff as Treasurer).  TAD will now be the Chapter’s liaison to the liaison officers helping with the recruitment of potential candidates for service academies focusing on USAFA.

 Meeting adjourned: 0845

 Old Business:  No old business.

 New Business:

 1.  Elections

  • Members voted Jeff Blank as the Chapter’s Treasurer
  • We thank TAD Draper for a job well done as previous president who now is the Chapter’s Admission Liaison Officer's Liaison Officer

2.  Chapter Communications

  • The present Chapter website is a low maintenance “Web 1.0” static type only for gathering posted information
  • Rhet Turnbull wants to get the Chapter into the “Web 2.0” ways for a better collaboration between members
    • “Younger” grads are well versed with internet style communications
    • Set up a Facebook site for the Chapter
    • Set up a Twitter site for the Chapter
    • Put the collaborative links into the Chapter website

 3.  Chapter Liaison activities to help potential candidates

  • Historical note on the present Character of Leader Awards being used to potentially help recruit candidates
    • One award at Papillion-La Vista HS
    • One award at Bellevue East HS
    • Suggestions for next HS?
  • In process of developing a handout and potentially meeting with candidates to discuss and demonstrate what they need to get ready
    • Boot preparations
    • Physical fitness preparations
    • Terminology
    • Mental preparations
    • Pat McVay wanted David Webster to demonstrate the PFT…;-)
  • The new communications forms could open the way for communications through the Chapter of cadets to potential candidates for a more up to date version of USAFA
  • Jim Lee said the UNO college fair this year also did not include USAFA as one of the booths
    • Same thing happened last year when Ed Yong went to the UNO college fair
    • The LO’s reported that they were not funded for the UNO college fair last year and this year
    • Last year, TAD Draper and Ed Yong offered to help the LO’s if funding is an issue and went through the AOG side to see any assistance could be done since it is a military side issue
      • LO politely declined our help
    • This year, we left it at asking the LO and received the same answer of lack of funding

 4.  Job Networking

  • David Webster brings up that the Chapter has contacts in various companies in the area to help Grads making the transition from military life to civilian life, or any Grads who may be looking for a job
    • The “old” Chapter website has a page if there are known jobs available
    • The “Info for Grads” e-mail lists known job opportunities
    • However, we can do a better job at knowing opportunities and getting it out to the Grads who may be looking

 5.  USAFA vs USMA, the game we came to watch at Indigo Joe’s

  • At halftime, the game is tied at 7 apiece.  USMA defense stifles USAFA offense.
  • USAFA offense wakes after halftime, final score USAFA 35 and USMA 7.

 Next Meeting Time/Location:

  • 4th Tuesday lunch social
  • Next officials’ meeting: TBD

Secretary/Admission Liaison Officer's Liaison Officer:   Ed Yong (Class of 86)

Agenda: Quarterly Officials’ Meeting

Meeting Called to Order: 0830

Old Business:  N/A

New Business:

1.  Treasurer’s Report:

  • $60 collected for dues
  • Checking total at $200
  • Savings total at $380
  • There is enough money to spin up a second Leader of Character Award for another high school in the local area

2. Leader of Character Award:  Awarded to high school junior for outstanding leadership and character.  High school faculty determines the winner from criteria provided by the AOG Chapter.  Selecting a junior provides a year for that junior selected to make the decision on going to a service academy.  The award also provides visibility of service academies to help with recruiting.  During awards night, representatives from the AOG Chapter present the award and get to make comments.  Comments center on the leadership and character importance and the US Air Force Academy worked into the speech.

  • Award program already set up with Papillion La Vista High School
  • Bellevue East High School next in line to set up for award program
  • TAD Draper has the forms and letters to send out
  • Volunteers willing to be at the high school award’s night please contact TAD Draper at (402)597-3754

5.  Eagle Scout promotion was very well done.  Thanks to our Larry Ortega for getting that promotion set up for grad participation.  The outcome is that we have a very good USAFA candidate.  Other grads helping: Bill Swick, Jon Stevens, Ed Yong, and Robyn Greishaber.  Funny how time flies as when Bill Swick graduated in 1965, Ed Yong was just 1 year old; and when Ed Yong graduated in 1986, Robyn Greishaber was born.

6. There is talk that USAFA baseball is coming to Omaha in mid April 2009.  USAFA to play against Creighton Bluejays.  More info to come as we find out more.

7. Ed Yong to rename the Events page to Upcoming Activities page on the Chapter Website, so that it stands out better.

8. Operations Air Force 2009:

  • The annual member meeting will coincide with an Ops AF social this year to give members an opportunity to meet with cadets and share information
    • Moving the annual member social to the summer for an Ops AF social will entail amending the Chapter charter to accommodate Chapter official elections

9.  We now have two astronaut grads in the local area.  If there is interest in getting one or both to speak about their space experiences, please let the Chapter Officials, know.  TAD will approach one or both to request time to share their experiences.  Could be another social and recruitment opportunities with potential candidates interested in USAFA.

10. If anyone knows of grads in the area who are not on TAD’s mailing list (see your e-mail address header), please pass on the Chapter information TAD sends out and get the contact information back to TAD, so that future mailings will reach as many grads as possible.
