Mentoring

Attention in the area! Attention in the area! There is an opportunity to mentor appointees. Do you remember what it was like getting shipped off to BCT? Here's an opportunity to come full circle to ensure that our new appointees meet BCT in the right attitude and physical condition.

  • The liaison officers are the main contacts with the appointees
  • If an appointee desires an AOG mentor, the LO contacts head LO who would select a AOG name from our list to the appointee (contact Ed Yong, cptyong@juno.com, to get on the list for the Heartland-LeMay Chapter)
  • As for time involved, the beginning may be at least an hour to meet and talk
  • From that initial meeting, if the appointee wants to meet more in person, it may be an hour per week
  • "Meeting" after the initial contact may end up being phone calls or e-mails depending on the appointee
  • Should the appointee wish to continue the mentor relationship, it may carry through at the four years at the Academy that would include letter writing, e-mail, and perhaps in person meetings when cadet comes home on leave
  • A lifetime friendship may develop

Basically, a mentor is there for the appointee when the appointee needs a mentor to talk to. I hope that helps provide a better picture of the appointee-mentor relation.

We are hosting a Leader of Character high school award for a worthy junior.  This gives the award winner a year to think about the potential of going to USAFA.  It also provides greater visibility of USAFA during the school's awards night where you have hundreds of students and parents who get to hear about USAFA through our award presentation.

Our own Jon Stevens (USAFA 72) is Bellevue East High School's award champion.  He volunteered to sponsor the award every year for Bellevue East High School.
