Gone But Not Forgotten
Captain Francis L. Zavacki, United States Marine Corps and United States Air Force Academy Class of 1964, died on 15 November 1969 aboard the hospital ship USS Repose from complications of wounds sustained in battle in South Vietnam.
Fran reported to the Academy from Wyoming, PA. He was a member of the 23rd Cadet Squadron. While others dreamed of becoming the world's greatest fighter pilots, he had his sights set on becoming a marine. His many accomplishments while at the Academy included serving as our Class President.
Following graduation, Fran took a commission with the United States Marine Corps, fulfilling his lifelong dream. In 1964 and 1965, he attended Marine Corps Basic Training at Quantico MCB, VA. In 1965 and 1966, he was a special projects officer at the Marine Corps Support Activity in Philadelphia, PA. In 1966 and 1967, he was officer in charge of a logistics support unit in Southeast Asia. From 1967 to 1969, he returned to the Marine Corps Support Activity in Philadelphia as an aide. In 1969, he returned to Vietnam as a Company Commander with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Division. He was mortally wounded in combat operations in August 1969.
