Gone But Not Forgotten


SpanglerSm.jpg First Lieutenant James N. Spangler, United States Air Force Academy Class of 1964, was killed on 19 May 1966 in a KC-135 accident in Okinawa.

Jim reported to the Academy from the mountains of Kentucky. While at the Academy, he was a member of the 22nd Cadet Squadron, where he honed his academic skills, learned to play squash and dance.

Upon graduation, Jim was assigned to Undergraduate Pilot Training in Texas. From there he was assigned to the 919th Air Refueling Squadron, Turner AFB, GA. He was then assigned to the 4252nd Strategic Wing, Kadena AB, Okinawa, where he was serving as a KC-135 aircrew member at the time of the accident.
