Class Of 1964 USAF Academy

The Big Upset

by Lou Comadena

In the early 1990's I was playing in a charity golf event, and my foursome's celebraty guest was Barry Alvarez, head football cuach at the University of Wisconsin at the time and currently the Director of Athletics at that same school. Before we teed off Barry and I were engaging in some small and I discovered that he was also a high school football player from Western Pennsylvania, and that he went to Nebraska on a football scholarship. As soon as he said Nebraska, I inquired as to when he was there. He told me, and I said you're too young to have been there then, but in 1963 our Air Force football team upset Nebraska in Lincoln. Barry replied, you're right that was before my time at Nebraska, but I did hear about it. Every time we were scheduled to play a team that we heavy favorites to beat, our coaches would say, "let us tell you about the time that we were prohibitave favorites to win and these little guys from the Air Force Academy came into Lincoln and upset us." I related this story to Terry Isaacson at our 45th reunion. He said to me that it was nice to hear that someone still remembers what they did that day. I still believe that was the biggest upset in USAFA football history, which further proves that "No one's done more than '64."
