B-52 Commemoration

To Class of 1960 from Andi Biancur:
Jerry Smith, Class of '62, has it in his mind to produce a plaque commemorating the B-52 actions in Viet Nam.  The plaque would be placed within the Vietnam-SEA Pavilion on the Heritage Trail.  I do not believe we have many who were involved, but I see no problem in placing his request on our class page.
___________

Letter from Jerry Smith '62 to Andi Biancur:
Here's the B-52 Plaque letter.  If you like the project, please pass it along to your classmates.  We will do all we can in the design to honor the Academy graduates who fought and died in this iconic aircraft.

_____________

Friends,

A group of Vietnam era B-52 crew members is planning a B-52 plaque for the Southeast Asia Memorial Pavilion at the Air Force Academy.  The B-52 was a major factor in the war, culminating in Linebacker II.  Project Arc Light was a vast operation of the Strategic Air Command, even while maintaining total commitment to the Cold War nuclear mission.

The Memorial Pavilion is a beautiful building which was provided by the Class of 1970 as a memorial to the classes of 1959 through 1973 who served and died in the war in Southeast Asia.  The Pavilion sits on a beautiful spot on the Heritage Trail near Doolittle Hall and overlooks the Academy's cadet area.

The plaque will be dedicated and attached to a prominent wall along with other plaques which are either done or are being planned. An existing plaque for the Red Marker FACs is shown at the bottom of this email.

Preliminary work is under way for the design and wording which will go on the plaque.  A former B-52 pilot with a Phd. in military history is working on a draft.  Sculptor Jim Nance, Class of 1971 will make the plaque.

The cost will be $5,000 which includes making and hanging the plaque and a contribution to the Pavilion project.

This email, of course, is to ask for contributions.  Work on the plaque cannot begin until the entire amount is on deposit with the AOG.  Contributions will be tax-deductible.  Donors will be invited to the dedication and hanging of the plaque.

Donations should be sent to:

Gary Howe

USAFA Association of Graduates

3116 Academy Drive

US Air Force Academy, 80840-4475

Please make the check payable to the Association of Graduates and annotate it with "1970 Class Gift Fund-B-52 plaque."

Respectfully,

Jerry Smith

Class of 1962

Pre-Academy Flying Adventures (Les Querry)

I found some old photos of some pre-Academy flying adventures that I thought I would share.
In the Summer of 1952, I participated in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Foreign Exchange program and, with 4 other CAP cadets from the US, was a guest of the Spanish Air Force for a month.
My dad wished me well before I flew right-seat in a C-45 Twin-Beech to Andrews AFB.

..then a MATS Connie from Wash. National to Frankfurt Rhein-Main via Labrador (16 hours).
...and a C-82 Flying Boxcar from Frankfurt to Madrid.

Then the luxury of traveling around Spain in a Junkers JU-52 with a Spanish crew.

..an STOL hop in a Fieseler Storch.

...and a frightening straight-down flight in a DFS Kranich II glider.

It was a fun Summer. Les
