From: Les Querry:

Over two years ago, I had produced and distributed to all classmates (and to many widows and children of deceased classmates) a DVD containing thousands of photographs, videos, audio clips and documents relating to the Class of 1960.

There was some unmentioned symbolism on the jacket cover that I was wondering if anyone ever noticed.

Notice that there are some decorative star clusters on the cover: two four-stars, two three-stars and five brigadiers, part of the Class of 1960's legacy.

If any of you noticed it before, please let me know Here.

And did anyone notice that the Class website's redesigned home page looks a bit like a heads-up display?

James E. Brown
USAFA Class of 1960
(at USAFA until 19 Feb 1959)
died on 23 August 2012
Indianapolis, IN

Dear Friends of Jim Brown,

I am Jim Brown's oldest son, Mike.

I wanted to let you know in case you had not heard that Dad passed away peacefully yesterday at 10:00am after his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). The family was called to be by his side by his Hospice Team last Friday as they thought Dad was ready to go on and be with mom. After almost a week and many, many goodbyes from the 5 siblings (and grandkids), God decided it was time. He no longer is in the pain that was controlled by all the meds, nor is he frustrated for not being able to communicate (with ALS, your mind is still sharp which is the horrible thing about this disease). You have all been a tremendous part of his life. And there are many more, of course, so if you wish to forward this email to others that may not know, please do so. Dad had given me access to his email address book early this year to monitor emails for him since he could no longer perform the functions of using his IPAD to communicate. (So that is how I got your email address). Dad's arrangements are included in the link below.

God Bless and thank you for being a part of Dad's life.

From Andi Biancur

29 July 2012

Today things have calmed down a bit. A large number of evacuees have been allowed to return to their homes west of I-25 and east of Centennial Blvd. The Academy still remains evacuated. The Class of 2016 was successfully in-processed and is remaining in the cadet area along with the Cadre doing the equipment/clothing check out and room prep stuff.

This morning the fire is being reported as 15 % contained with full containment forecast no earlier than 16 July. The weather and winds cooperated yesterday and the fire in burning toward the northwest up into the mountains and along the Rampart Range north. Thus far it has not come over the ridge above the Academy and was halted some quarter mile from the Academy southern boundary. It has consumed some 18,000 acres or 29 square miles.

The 8:00 am briefing will update the parameters but thus far there have been 347 homes destroyed and they have found one fatality--a person who did not evacuate from a destroyed home. (miraculously no other injuries or fatalities to either victims or fire fighters). The only person I know that has experienced loss is Dick Coppock '61. I am told, they evacuated but lost their home--but they had pictures.

The "First" fire fighter is scheduled to arrive in the area sometime today and there is a general negative feeling about his arrival. What with his enhanced security requirements and the flight restrictions, he is seen to be a definite hindrance to the entire operation.

We are not our of the woods. Several areas remain under evacuation orders and alerts and they are anticipating a start of the summer thunderstorm season. This produces several dry thunderstorms which contain multiple lightening strikes. (Yesterday one passed over Pike's Peak and recorded 81 lightning strikes--any one of which could start additional fires in this tinder box.

The attached URLs supplied by Ron will allow you to learn more of the operation if you wish. If anything comes out in today's briefing, I will forward it on. Again, I am sending information only to keep those of you who have expressed interest in following the breaking events. In many ways, this is an historic event in Colorado Springs, the Academy, and Colorado. I believe the news will fall off within the next couple of days as July Fourth takes the headlines.

Recent Aerial Video Footage of Fire Retardant Drops from a C-130

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo--Recently released aerial video footage of fire retardant drops from a C-130 today against the Colorado wild fires is now available at the following link:

From Jenny Glaza:

27 July 2012

We've received several phone calls and e-mails from concerned family and friends. Up until yesterday the fire was behind the front range and even though we could see the smoke plumes, there were no homes burned and (only) about 11,000 evacuees. About 4pm yesterday the fire jumped the containment lines, crested the front ridge, and a 65mph wind gust drove the fire down into houses in Mountain Shadows. The people there had been given pre-evacuation notice and only 2 hours later were told to leave immediately. Last night we could see homes burning from our house. Jim said it looked like a war zone. We know people who lived up there and we're afraid they may no longer have a home to return to. We found that their phone is "disconnected".
One of the areas burned is the Flying W Ranch which many of you enjoyed when you joined us for the "rehearsal dinner" during our wedding. The ranch had been here for over 60 years and now it is totally gone.
The Air Force Academy has evacuated the housing areas on the Academy grounds and we can see smoke and fire on the southern boundary of the Academy (reportedly, 10 acres of the Academy's Southwest corner have burned). Last we heard, the Academy continues to plan for the doolies entry tomorrow morning at the Association of Graduates building.
There are now 32,500 evacuees (including Jim's ex-wife, Linda)--not including the ongoing evacuation of the North side of Woodland Park--and the number is certain to increase. They have added pre-evacuations orders for Monument and Palmer Lake west of I 25 and south of County Line road (Monument Hill). Essentially, almost all areas west of I 25 south of County Line road and north of Hwy 24 are under either evacuation or pre-evacuation orders.
Currently, the fire has burned over 15,000 acres and is only 5% contained and they don't expect full containment until July 16. The conditions here couldn't be worse. Our rainfall for the last 2 years has been less than 15% of normal, there is a lot of dead trees from the pine beetle kill 10 years ago, and we have been reaching record highs ever for the history of Colorado Springs. Add to that the extreme terrain and high shifting winds and one of the top fire incident commanders in the nation said he's never seen a fire like this. This fire is the top fire priority in the nation, consuming over half of all our nation's fire fighting resources and we're told Obama plans to visit on Friday. Since we are east of I 25 we feel that we are safe, since it is highly unlikely that the fire would take hold on this side of the freeway.

Thanks for your concern. We will let you know if anything substantially changes.
Jim and Jenny

Subject: COS Luncheon

Happy new year classmates!

Wednesday, 1/11/12, 1230, at Champs is our next luncheon. Per the request of the group after Fred Porter's discussion in December, we are having instructor/AOC/grad Major Elaine Bryant as a guest speaker. She is going to give us her impression of cadets, training and what the academy is doing. This is our first time to bring someone from outside the group as a guest. I hope that you will make an extra effort to attend.

Please let me know if you will be attending. As you have noticed, we are able to pull in chairs if you initially say no but decide at the last minute to attend.

See you next week.

Wayne

PS: Steve Bishop left a message at my office wishing me a Happy New Year but did not leave a number. If any of you can know where he is, please invite him.
