Les, I noticed that you have taken over some of the duties from Ace. I was clearing out some of my old email at the office in anticipation of retiring in a few weeks and came across this explanation from Andi Biancur on the origin of the class motto, Nulli Secundus. His email to me was in response of a short article I submitted trying to trace to origins of the motto. If you recall that article about five years ago it was used as the name of a British dirigible. It was also a "slam" in this case to the French who were recognized, or at least they recognized themselves, as the pre-eminent makers of dirigibles. In any case you might want to extract most of the first paragraph and post if you think it would be of interest to our other classmates.
Dated 10-17-2002
Charlie,
I read your info and trivia on the class web page and, although the info is very interesting, the origin of our class motto is not nearly as romantic. I was on the class ring committee and we were each asked to submit designs. The design I submitted, and was accepted as our class crest was centered around quite a bit of symbolism. The bird, a falcon, is seen flying from the sabre toward the cross. The bird represents each one of us travelling from cadethood, represented by the sabre, toward a star, the cross, which throughout history has represented Polaris, the star traditionally used by navigators/pilots to find their true heading representing a life goal - whatever it may. The Falcon is flying above a cloud deck which is supposed to represent clear, calm weather. The banner carried by the falcon with the words Nulli Secundus is both a statement and a slam. The statement is that we, as a class, take second place to no one, and the slam is directed toward the first class. who, as you recall, considered themselves better than us other mortals. Originally I had put the phrase in English but thought, prior to submission, that it would be more acceptable to use Latin. I went to the library and found the translation.
I wish it were all more intriguing than that but those are the simple facts. I guess to find out now that there were/are deeper meanings does not detract from it all - and might even add to the overall mystique.
We missed you and Kathleen at the Air Force-Navy weekend reunion. We had 31 grads back and it was great fun. I'll be getting out the MiniSki letter the first week in November. I hope you can join us for that. It always garners a lot of laughs and tons of fun.
Take care,
Andi

As an elected class officer, part of my responsibility is to keep each of you informed of events that may have an impact on you and/or the class. In that interest, there are several situations unfolding both within the AOG and the Academy that may be of interest to you.
I think the best method of covering ongoing events is to post a series of open letters on the class website ( www.usafa.net/1960/) in the "Class Business" section. That way you can read them as time and interest allow. I am prepared to respond by e-mail, telephone, and/or letter to
expand, clarify, or debate those subjects. Should there be other issues on your mind, let me know and I will attempt to address them in later correspondence.
Initially, I will attempt to cover the evolving status of the AOG leadership , fund raising activities, recent Academy directions, status of our class projects, and class communications. I ask you to give some latitude to my words. I have tried to stay informed about operations at the Academy and the AOG. Hence, the dilemma of becoming emotionally involved. I will make the effort, but may not be able to remove the emotion from my text.
Remember you have the right and responsibility to communicate directly with the AOG Board of Directors (BOD) on any matter. They work directly for the membership and want to be informed of your thoughts. The newly formed Class Advisory Senate represented by Dick Sexton (who is doing an excellent job) also serves as a communicative conduit to the BOD. You can contact the BOD through Dick. If you do contact the BOD direct, please copy Dick so he can stay in the loop.

Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 08:43:57 -0700> From: boomer34usaf@yahoo.com> Subject: Update on Houston Proton Adventure, aka Houston Vacation> To: rctherose@aol.com> Completed my 18th of 38 treatments this morning. Everything still going smooth with no side effects. The daily 30-second shots of protons in each hip come in at velocity of 125,000 miles per second in the shape of my prostate plus a 7 millimeters border. The protons come to a stop in the prostate in a concentration of energy called a "Bragg's Peak". The protons steal electrons from the cancerous cells and they die, with ultimate absorption and discharge by the body. My nurse tells me that I am taking the easiest cancer treatment known to man! Dr Lee says I should be good for another 15 to 20 years after completion. So I expect not to worry about prostate cancer again in my lifetime. As I said, I am very pleased with my decision to come to Houston. By the way, MD Anderson employs 77,000 people.> I'm busy from six in the morning until ten at night. The computer has sucked me in and time is flying. I do make forays for lots of protein and exercise, but have put sight-seeing on hold until my book is further along. I am complying Elizabeth Singer's memoirs (deceased wife) with the aid of "Dragon Naturally Speaking" voice recognition software. So I sit here most of the day with my headset and microphone reading her journals, letters, and assorted information into the computer. When I get another portion done I back it up with a paper copy and flash drive just in case my computer gets stolen. I am not exactly impressed with security here; indeed, crime is probably my greatest risk. But that is another story. Elizabeth's husband at the time, Major Don Singer was snatched from a Strategic Air Command (SAC) "Select" B-52 aircrew in April 1966 for a new weapons system, the F-105F Wild Weasel, to counter Surface-to-Air (SAM) missiles over North Vietnam. The Weasel carried two SHRIKE missiles to home on the SAM radar beams and destroy the sites. Both Major Singer and Elizabeth had a premonition that the assignment was a death sentence. that he would not be coming back home. They had four small children, ages five to ten. I have just completed the part from "his and her's" letters and recordings where you can feel their quiet desperation as the noose tightens on Major Singer. The Weasel force arrived on July 6, 1966 at Takhli Air Base, Thailand with 16 F-105F two-man crews. On July 19th, with Colonel Joe Brand and Major Singer in the lead aircraft of a flight of four Weasels, the flight dodged eight SAM missiles fired at them. The preferred method for dodging the SAMs was to turn into the SAM in a head-on position. When the supersonic SAM got close, the Weasels would hit after-burner and dive. The missile could not turn sharply enough and would explode harmlessly behind the aircraft. Don writes, "After a short dive, we pulled up and did a hard 90 degree turn; I looked down and saw a big AAA gun firing at us and saw a SAM zoom by our tail and explode behind us." By August 11th, the Weasel force was down to four aircrews and two aircraft. Some got hit by flying in or too close to clouds where you couldn't see the SAMs coming. On August 17th, Colonel Joe Brand and Major Don Singer were shot down and both ejected. Covering aircraft saw that one parachute was a streamer, but were too high to see if it blossomed before it hit the ground. Colonel Brand called from the ground on his emergency radio, "This is Joe, I'm OK". Neither Joe or Major Singer were ever heard from again. The Air Force carried them for eleven years as Missing-In-Action (MIA). So now the Weasel force was down to one aircraft and three aircrews--the squadron was disbanded. Meanwhile, Elizabeth had a dream ten days before that Don's plane had crashed in a fireball and Don and Joe had ejected, so she was expecting the Casualty Notification Team when it arrived. She never gave up, though, until eleven years later, Don and Joe's remains were identified and returned to the U.S. This is her story for her kids and grand kids of how they coped. It is also Don and Elizabeth's love story. When I get through, we will see if it also has potential to become a best seller and Academy Award movie. For email privacy, I have addressed all but you, Rosie, with blind carbon copies (BCC). I believe the addresses show up, though, if you forward the email to anyone. Cheers, Phil Meinhardt

Some of you already know parts of this, but I thought I'd update everyone at once. I completed my first eight proton prostate treatments today with all going well; I have 30 more to go. My job now is to get myself onto the Proton Gantry Table at 0800 each morning and lie motionless while they take elaborate aim and fire one 30 second burst of protons into each hip each day. I can't even tell when they shoot. This happens five days a week with the weekends off. So far, there have been no side effects. I am very pleased with my decision to select MD Anderson.Veronica accompanied me on the long auto journey from San Diego and spent over two weeks here before flying back to San Diego. She will be back again for my graduation on September 17th. Veronica lived here for 17 years; so we visited with her friends; she showed me her favorite areas; and got me checked out on Houston. On a weekend sojourn to Galveston, however, we were looking at Veronica's former beach house when my car transmission (100,000 miles) began actingstrange. We were lucky to limp back to Houston. Repairs were a jab in the eye, $5500, but I now have a two-year warranty for parts and labor at any Mercedes dealer. My address here is 5445 Braesvalley, Apt 713, Houston, TX 77096, a church-sponsored apartment for $25 per day. Cell phone is 619-871-6250 and apartment phone is 713-283-1677.Time is going fast. I am working on Elizabeth's memoirs, dictating her journals into the computer. Minimum objective is to get her story together for her four kids and grandkids.Hope all is well with you.Cheers, Phil Meinhardt

Dear Classmates,
Here is an update on the Class Advisory Senate meeting of July 11. (The minutes are posted on the AOG website. Go to "About AOG," then "Class Advisory Senate". There are links to the By-Laws, procedures, members, minutes, etc.) Jim Wheeler, the new Board chair was present by phone as was Pat Rosenow, Board liaison. Steve Dotson was on the phone for a while but had to drop off. Jim Shaw, AOG president, & George VanWagenen, new Board member, were present in person.
After some administrative maters we got down to a discussion of fundraising and the various foundation proposals. It was too early to advocate any specific proposal so the discussion focused on the general topic of fundraising & the need for an effective fundraising structure - whether or not that involved a foundation. Jim Wheeler stated that the new Board is considering establishing a Fund Raising Advisory Commission (FRAC) to develop specific proposals. The Senate will be actively involved in this process. In this respect we (as class representatives) will try to keep you informed of what is going on & get your feedback before things get set in concrete. You might also want to take a look at Zoomienation & USAFAToday for more discussion. Both Bob Heiges & Mike Loh have contributed some intelligent discussion in contrast to some of the vitriolic rantings that can also be found there. In a more recent development after the meeting I understand that some of the grads have already formed an independent foundation completely outside the AOG structure. I can't find any details on who, what or when - I think I know why - or what the objection/strategic view of this foundation is. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it if you would share it with me & the rest of the class. If this is in fact correct it is a major development that will have a major impact on the whole fundraising issue.
The new Board will have its first meeting on August 11-12. I will be there as president of the Senate & will let you know my impressions when the meeting is over.
Sincerely,
Dick Sexton
p.s. I am forwarding this via the AOG because they can do a mass mailing. If you reply to the AOG they will forward it to me - or you can contact me directly at sextonrch@aol.com. I will also try to post it on our class web page & Jock is working on another method for sending these reports to the class.

What I've started doing is posting my quarterly column on the class web site. The last two columns should be on there by now. So, I'll have a much longer column--containing all the news that's "fit to print"--on the class web site, and, an abbreviated version in the CheckPoints magazine. Ace,
We have a group of guys here in Washington that call ourselves THE DC '60 We get together for lunch once a quarter or so to tell lies and swap war stories. I usually do a recap of the event for the guys that cannot make it. Since we have your new web site I thought maybe you could put the attached copy on the net. Hope all is going well with you. My son is stationed at McGuire AFB and every time I go to see him I am reminded of you and the good times we had flying for MATS!!!!!!! Take care my friend.

=====================================
Subject: Luncheon
DC '60 et.al.
Another great luncheon for the DC '60 at the Springfield Country Club. Sorry more of u could not have attended but summer is a busy time. Jerry de la Cruz and Bill goodyear were tied up with the grandchildren, Ken Alnwick was at his summer home in Florida, Al Johnson was at his winter home in Maine, A bit far for Bill Hales to come, Doug Req just had his hip replaced and had to work the farm out in Iowa, Bob Odenweller had business committments as did Bill Carnegie. RG Head is now a native of California and Bob Fischer was just AWOL.
It was still a lively luncheon: Mike Loh expressed his pleasure with the new AOG Board and I took the other side. Don't think we solved anything. Mike is adamant about using the new Zoomie Nation web sight as a communications link. I would like to give our new Ace Holman web sight a chance. This too remained an open issue. Maybe at the next get together we can reach an agreement. Tom Burke was a marshall at the recent Tiger Woods/AT&T golf tournament here in Washington. He gave us a great rundown on the tournament, the players, and the chances that the tournament will continue in the years to follow. Ralph Lalime told us how we got the motto Nulli Secundus. Seems the first try was Nulus Secundus which meant second to nothing according to the Latin experts. Anyway Ralph straightened them out so that we have our proper motto. Ralph and I were also on the NBC Channel 4 News last week. We were enjoying Starbucks and a cigar when the reporter and cameraman came up and asked if we would care to comment on the recently passed Virginia law that levees additional fines for gross traffic offenses: drunk driving, excessive speed etc. I took the airlifter approach and said "Hang Them". Ralph took the fighter pilot approach and said "Give Them a Second Chance" It made for good commentary on the 5 and 6 o'clock news. Tom Burke just had his tenth grandchild. Haller leads with 15. GJC Fries's youngest daughter will be married in April. George will then look for a retirement home. Leon Goodson enjoyed a trip to Oklahoma to watch his grandaughters reap a bunch of prizes and awards. He has a new super motor bike and continues to challenge the local traffic. Les Querry has set aside the 27th of October for another Falcon Roosting at his mountain top home. Put it on you calenders and if you have classmates in town invite them to come. Les still needs your pictures, slides and old tapes to prepare a super DVD for the fiftieth. Bill Taylor has recovered from his hip surgeries. He is still deeply involved in trying to help the Air Force absorb all its new pilots and determine who will fly the UAV's. Ralph Lalimes son just completed a solo kayak trip down the Potomac River, quite a feat. Norm Haller has an additinal job of dog catcher, almost missed the luncheon! He and Liz will soon head out to CO for Liz's 50th high school reunion. He also enjoyed a nice visit with John Kuenzel and discussed the financial management career field. Mike Clarke continues to run the Air Force Board at the National Academy of Science. He says he will never retire. His wife Nancy is completing her 27th year as the Chief Floral Designer for the White House. If Hillary wins the presidency she will never let Nancy retire. Mike will probably ending up working for his buddy BILL!!!!!!!
Well that is the latest from the 51st Anniversary Luncheon. If I have left anything out feel free to make ammendments and additions.
We have not set a date for another luncheon since we have the AF/Navy game in Sept and Les's event in October. See you there.
