Subject: Pictures from AFA-USMA Football Weekend

Date: 1/28/02

Dear "All":

I had sent you pictures of the AFA-Army game weekend via e-mail some moons ago...some of you were unable to download those 40 photos I had sent as MS Word.

So, I've placed them here on the 1960 Class Website--just go toHERE for Pictures.

With thanks to Ace Holman for doing all the work on this, I know you'll have hours and hours of REAL fun just looking at the photos of this event of last November. Enjoy.

There's no downloading on this, just as easy as 1, 2, and 3....all the way up to 40. (By the way, somehow, and by someone whom I know not, and in what ever way, there are some photos of little kiddies, twins I think, who slipped in, probably by mistake, and certainly without my knowledge, and Karen knows NOTHING about it, but they certainly are kinda cute...but: they are NOT our daughter Brandy's twins in Boston. Absolutely not. I checked it out).

This Fall's weekend is around the Navy-AFA game on the 12th of October, hq at the Radisson again. You'll be getting an invite soon.

Thanks for coming last November, and hope to see you at the next Foofaraw this October--our first one in a Palindromic Year!

Rosie

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2001 AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

WHERE DID ANOTHER YEAR GO ? IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY LAST MONTH THAT WE OFFERED OUR CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM.

WE HAD SEVERAL GOOD HAPPENINGS THIS YEAR. MITZI CELEBRATED HER 20TH CLASS REUNION AND THAT BROUGHT SHE, PAT, BEN AND MELANIE HERE FOR SEVERAL DAYS OF VISITING AND PARTYING. ;-) DEBBIE'S NEPHEWS ALSO HIT MILESTONES: JOHN GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND STARTED HIS STINT AT DALLAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY (WHERE WE THINK HE IS MAJORING IN MUSIC, OFF ROADING AND BUILDING MUSCLES BY HAULING/LOADING AND UNLOADING TIRES; JAMES HAS PHASED AHEAD FROM JUNIOR TO SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL WITH A PROGRAM THAT ACCELERATES HIS GRADUATION AND GETS HIM STARTED ON COLLEGE A YEAR EARLY. ;-) ;-)

PETE, MY STEP DAD CELEBRATED HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY IN AUGUST AND WE MADE THE TRIP TO ENJOY THAT CELEBRATION. SOUTHWESTERN BELL AND RICE UNIVERSITY ALUMS MADE A BIG DEAL OF THIS AND PRESENTED SOME NEAT GIFTS AND COMMENTS ON THE OLDEST CLASS OF '20 GRADUATE. WE ALL HAD OUR SHOT AT "ROASTING" HIM BUT HE HAD THE LAST WORD; AND EVEN THE GREAT-GREATS LISTENED TO POPS AS HE GAVE SECRETS TO HIS GOOD LONG LIFE.

ON THE WAY TO THE CELEBRATION, WE SPENT A COUPLE OF DAYS IN KANSAS CITY. DEBBIE GOT TO VISIT HER ALMA MATER, AND WE VISITED WITH SEVERAL OF HER COLLEGE MATES. IT WAS A MINI REUNION AND A LOT OF "DO YOU REMEMBER..." AND LAUGHTER.

DEB AND I MADE A TRIP TO SANTA FE, NM IN MARCH FOR SAE AND MET WITH SOME OLD FRIENDS OF MINE AND VISITED KIT CARSON'S HOME AND AN OLD SPANISH HACIENDA. IN SEPTEMBER I WENT ALONE TO SEATTLE FOR THE MEETINGS AND MET WITH AN OLD FRIEND FOR DINNER. UNFORTUNATELY THAT TRIP COINCIDED WITH THE NEW YORK CITY TRADE CENTER TERRORIST ATTACK. LUCKILY I HAD A RENTAL CAR AND THEY SAID JUST LET US KNOW WHERE YOU DROP IT OFF, SO I HEADED HOME BY WAY OF WASHINGTON, OREGON, IDAHO, UTAH, WYOMING, COLORADO (HAD TO STOP IN DENVER FOR A DAY TO CATCH UP ON HUGS FROM BEN AND MELANIE AND THEIR MOM), THEN ON TO TEXAS.

MITZI'S CLAN HAS BEEN "SOCIALIZING A HELPER DOG FOR NEARLY A YEAR, AND NOVEMBER BROUGHT THE DAY THEY HAD TO TURN "LENNON" OVER FOR HIS NEXT PHASE OF TRAINING IN SAN FRANCISCO. MITZI, SUZANNE, BEN, MELANIE, LENNON AND A COUPLE OF OTHER DOGS SET OUT IN THE FIRST BIG SNOWSTORM FROM DENVER TO SAN FRAN' VIA SALT LAKE CITY. IN ALL IT TOOK ABOUT 10 DAYS, THE TRIP BACK INCLUDED NEW PUPS AND A RETURN DOG AND THEY NOW HAVE SNOW STORIES TO LAST FOR QUITE A WHILE.

NEXT YEAR BRINGS MY SECOND RETIREMENT. I TOO WANT TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS AND ONE OF PETE'S BIG SECRETS IS THAT HE GOT AWAY FROM STRESS. THE OFFICE HAS BECOME A STRESS SO I AM QUITTING IT ;-) OFFICIALLY IT IS THE 31ST OF JANUARY 2002 BUT I ONLY HAVE ONE REQUIRED WORKDAY IN JANUARY. ;-) I WILL HAVE TO GO IN SEVERAL DAYS TO SHOVEL THE "STUFF" OUT OF MY OFFICE SO IT CAN BE TURNED INTO A BROOM CLOSET RATHER THAN A MEMORIAL TO UNFINISHED PROJECTS WHEN I LEAVE. I HOPE TO STAY ACTIVE IN SAE AND IN "HELPING" THE DoD AS THEY DO TERRIBLE THINGS TO INNOCENT HOSE SPECIFICATIONS TO SAVE THEIR JOBS, RATHER THAN IMPROVING AND UPDATING THE PRODUCTS. I ALSO PLAN TO DO SOME SUBSTITUTING AT THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL, CHASE DEBBIE, STRAIGHTEN OUT THE SHOP AND GARAGE, CHASE DEBBIE, REFINISH SOME FURNITURE, CHASE DEBBIE AND MAYBE PLAY SOME PASTURE POOL.

WE ARE VERY BLESSED TO HAVE OUR HEALTH, OUR FAITH, OUR FRIENDS, OUR FAMILY AND TO LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE. GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.

NORM AND DEBBIE ALEXANDER

Great to hear from you.
Did you get my address from the class web page?
If no, then go to www.usafa.net/1960 and check
out the class web site. While there, see if you
can identify yourself in the class 'summer of 56'

I found Caskey in the class roster (caskeyjl@aol.com

Hello whoever you are,

My name is Jack Ballard and I was one of the 1960 class
who dropped by the wayside. My cadet serial number was 317K
and I do remember the Falcon Club.

I am now a retired Captain for The Flying Tiger Line. There
is a good chance I transported some former classmates to or
from Nam.

I am interested in contacting, in particular, Jerry Caskey

course, my roomie Ed Nogar.

Your assistance will be deeply appreciated.

The following is a message about JD's memorial service from Lorna Aldrich, John Macartney's widow.

Jock

--------------------------
Dear Friends,

Thank you for all of your messages. It is a great comfort to be reminded of your fond memories of John. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 on January 11 at the Old Post Chapel at Ft Myer. Ft Myer is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, where John will be interred.

The delay is due to a large backlog of World War II veterans at Arlington and our desire to avoid holiday travel problems for those who want to fly. Please allow time for passing through security when you enter Ft Myer.

As of today, 28 Nov, no final arrangements have been made for JD. I talked to his wife, Lorna Aldrich, yesterday and she has informed me that JD will be cremated and then there will be a service at Ft. Meyer; No burial at Arlington.

The problem right now is that there is a long waiting list for the Ft. Meyer Chapel. Once they get a date they will need a few days notice because all of JD's family is in California.

Meanwhile Lorna has decided to have friends send donations to the Academy in lieu of flowers. I told her to tell folks to send the donation to the Class of 1960 Fund in honor of JD and mail the donation to the Association of Graduates. I advised her that when all the funds are collected she will get a chance to make a decision on how the funds should be used. Pat, is that the proper procedure??

You take care and let me know if there is anything else I should say to the MacArtney family.

Here is John's Obit from the Washington Post:

John D. Macartney

Air Force Colonel John David Macartney, 63, whose 30-year Air Force career included a stint as commandant of the Defense Intelligence College in the mid-1980s and who retired in 1990 as a teacher at National Defense University at Fort McNair, died of cancer Nov. 24 at his home in Washington.

In the 1990s, Col. Macartney taught international relations at American University and Syracuse University's Semester in Washington program. Since 1992, he had co-edited the Intelligencer, helping to transform the Association of Former Intelligence Officers newsletter into a biannual journal.

He was a Denver native and grew up in the Los Angeles area. He was a 1960 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado and received a master's degree in international relations and a doctorate in political science, both from the University of California at Los Angeles.

He was a fighter pilot in the 1960s and saw combat in the Vietnam War. He then did intelligence work in Hawaii before settling in the Washington area in 1984 as commandant of the Defense Intelligence College at Bolling Air Force Base.

His marriage to Anne Fields Macartney ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Lorna Aldrich of Washington; a son from his first marriage, Stephen, of Washington; and a sister.

Subject: NYC Tragedy And Aftermath

Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 16:04

Dear Classmates:

In the interest of sharing our classmate Bill Carnegie's experience as a resident of the New York City area, I am forwarding his reply to my query as to how he and his family fared as a result of the tragic events there yesterday. He is aware that this is being posted on our Class Website, and I thank him for his willingness to allow me to do so.

From: Bill Carnegie

Date: 9/12/01 10:46

Thanks for thinking of us here. I worry about all academy graduates since many in NY work in the financial district. We are all OK, I hope and think, since I have not been able to contact my sister who lives on 93rd street. The phones are not working. I have no reason to believe she was downtown at 9am. I am including mail with a friend which is poignant. Unfortunately my next door neighbor lost several of his staff since his office was hit by the first plane. He is communications director for a global company and works late. His staff is split in groups that start at 8am (all missing) and the rest who come in at 0930 to 1000 and work late. They are all OK. He will have to rebuild the company IT and communications in a disaster site in midtown, but he cannot even go to the city today. Morgan Stanley had 36 floors, the largest tenant. Our company president is having a bad experience, but only that. She left Monday for Chicago. Her trip included a scare because there was a building fire Monday at Newark airport that shutdown the airport for a while. Then, when she got to the airport in the evening it was in the middle of bad thunderstorms. She had to change her flight four times or something like that. Now this. She is in Chicago with our Marketing Manager and hoping to rent a car to drive back. I do not think she will be flying anytime soon. Our company should be better for it for the two women are sure to have bonded like crazy glue after this and they are the guts of the revenue stream. Its a pretty small place; 38 people; 7 in England. It is peaceful and great weather here and I am just working the pain away. I am getting a lot done because nothing is really normal today. On the other hand, my work is not at full pace either. Curiously I work next to a religious Muslim and a Jewish fellow. The Muslim is from Bombay and is a really nice guy who has lived in India as a peaceful minority. He is a real cut up. He would fit right in to Academy life as far as joking around goes. He has a new beard, and I suggested that he shave yesterday. First time he has not had a retort. But, I feel bad, and apologized this morning. Oh, well; that is all right, but all is sad.

Email--------------------
(The man described below is a Buddhist son
of a Jewish father and Mexican catholic mother.)

I hope all is well with you. I am thinking of going to the mountaintop.
Anne's school was closed at 1pm and she got home with not much
traffic in NJ. I am at work doing a large script and trying not to
think too much, but it isn't working. Our web site traffic will
probably be way down, but it is surprising that the Internet is
handling what should be a big load. I will probably head home early
as a lot of people here have left since schools are getting out
early or they have a spouse in NY or what not. Our company
president flew out yesterday; there was a fire in Newark that closed
the airport; then there was a thunderstorm that had her muttering
about flying yesterday; now this. She may not take trips for awhile.
Take care.
Bill Carnegie

Bill, you were the only one outside of family who called or asked. I am out of words, so I will let Sonam speak for me. This is a copy of what he sent his friends tonight.

Hi.
I just wanted to make sure that everyone is okay and alive. I've spoken to some of you on the phone, but some not. It's been a long day, wondering whether or not people were alive or dead. I don't know how many of you watched this live, or had loved ones in the area, but yes or no, it was still sobering. My father works four blocks away from the World Trade Center. As he and his boss were coming out of the subway, they saw what looked like a ticker tape parade of business papers by WTC tower one. My father's boss was late for a seminar on the 102nd floor of tower 1. They both walked towards the towers looking at the floating papers. When they were one block away, the second plane passed overhead, and crashed into the second tower. They ran for their lives. When the buildings collapsed, they took shelter in their own building 4 blocks away. They could not travel for hours due to the excessive smoke, but they finally walked up to 14th street to the A. I woke up at 9:00 to go to school. Five or ten minutes later, the phone rang. My mother answered it in the other room, and I heard quiet talking. She came into the hall, and said "Don't go to school, someone just flew a plane into the world trade center." I was still groggy, and didn't understand at first, but we turned on the television. I was in front of that television for about two hours. I watched in horrified fascination as the towers burned. People were jumping. And then one tower fell...And the second. I felt impotent. Furious. There are few times in my post adolescent life when I have cried, but I have cried several times today. What could I do? I had to do something. I walked down to Columbia Presbyterian to try to give blood. When I arrived, I was almost gratified to find out that they had so many volunteers that their freezers couldn't hold more at that time. They took my name, and number, and said they would call me if they needed more blood. I also gave my name for a list of volunteers. I have no medical training, but I thought I might carry bandages or medicine or something. I went home. They haven't called. I hope they do.

Regarding Aaron Thrush's putting my remarks up on the net:

My Sister was fine in midtown. The women drove back from Chicago in a lot of rain. Our muslim co-worker shaved off his beard. Also, Anne was worried about our son since he does some work in the Pentagon, but although he had interviewed people in the damaged area, he was not currently working on that project.

In the aftermath it was good to find that ALL of the children got out of the day care centers. Now besides the tough clean-up there are everyday little problems. J.P.Morgan Chase has sporadic problems with parts of its network due to damage in the Wall Street area. An ATM debited my account and gave me no money, but they will clear it up; it has happened to the branch manager herself.

I'll get out a letter to all those I am aware would like to join but if there are any other classmates who wish to join us this year, let me know so I can get you on the mailing list. Hi Frank,

Actually, I'm doing pretty good. I spent about 3 months pulling the engine out of my helicopter and trying to fix all the oil leaks. I can't afford a overhaul at this time, so spent about a $1000 replacing seals and gaskets. Finally got everything back together and working last week. It's nice to have everything going as planned for a change. We just returned from a 2-week riverboat cruise in Russia. I must say it was probably the most interresting and best trip we have taken. I wrote a review about the trip that you can see at , if you're interrested. At the site go to "Reviews" and then to "Misc. Reviews". We are leaving at the end of September for a trip to Japan, China, Thailand ans Singapore. Did you ever get that Cessna 150 you were thinking about?

Bill (Frenchy) Ouellette died last nite. Talked to Marilyn about an hour ago. Had tried earlier in the afternoon, but didn't even get the 'answering machine'. A little later I got a busy signal. Then I got Marilyn.

I about lost it on the phone! I told her I'd get the word out to the Academy side of the house, since she said she hadn't told any classmates yet. Hey, the good news is that Bill got to take his 'fishing trip'. The bad news is that he won't "physically" be at the Navy Game this year. He DID make the Army Game at West Point last November.

Anyway --- GUYS: aka, info addees, I don't know how to handle this!!! Class Pres., Jocko, Rosie, Herr Kaley (bringer of Bill to the Army Game (thanks)), how do I get this to the AOG? HELP! and don't call. I don't need to get any grimmer. The next Reunion just turned a lot more on the sad side.

Funerals Monday. I have Zero particulars.

Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 21:30

The South Carolina Alexanders have moved again. Martha and I moved to 2625 Dog Leg Lane in Seneca, SC (near Clemson) last month. We are still knee deep in boxes but making progress. Martha has one more week of teaching in Walhalla and I continue to serve as Economic Development Director for Oconee County South Carolina. It is a very challenging for both of us but we are still young at heart even though the body tells us to slow down at times.

We are heading to C Springs this next weekend to visit General Ed Eberhart at Space Command. Ed and Karen have been good friends since their days as the Vice and then Wing Commander of the 363 TFW at Shaw AFB. Hope the weather is a little better than what we have seen on the news lately.

Thanks again Ace for making it so easy to chat with our class.

Our new telephone number is (864) 866-1045.

Take care!

Jim Alexander

Ace & Weese,

Many thanks for a wonderful weekend in Mobile. You are great hosts and really know how to entertain your guests.

After you dropped us off at the airport we went directly to curb side check in. To our surprise the return flight had been canceled and we were directed to go inside and to the ticket counter. Delta said it was a maintenance problem and would put us on a later flight that evening. Delta indicated they could put us on a Northwest flight via Memphis that would arrive in San Fransico [SFO] around 2100. We elected to take that and were issued tickets for Northwest. We next went to the Northwest ticket counter for seat assignments and they said their flight was full but would put us on a United flight that would arrive around 1900. We agreed and went to the United ticket counter. United said their flight was full and ran us back to Delta. Delta had received two cancellations since our last visit and could get us on an overbooked flight to Atlanta. The flight was leaving earlier and we had to hurry to the gate to make the flight. Well, we made it and were home 15 minutes early. Exciting!!

Tell little [Wiener dog] Ace I missed his great kisses this morning.

Don't forget our motto, "Eat early and eat often."

The download is a picture ofGreg III kite surfing.

Cheers, Greg & Junie

Dear Friends,

I have just read and signed the online petition:

"Veterans' Disability Compensation Injustice - Support HR 303" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/HR303aid/

I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself.

Hello Charlie,

We're in the process of moving from the Dallas / Fort Worth area up to Bellingham, WA. That's where three of our four kids live. I've been using a local area ISP (Cowtown.net) for the past several years. I've changed to (netzero), for the time being, since I will be able to access netzero from both here and in Washington.

If there is an automated way to change my e-mail address on the Class of 60 page I was not able to find it, so I guess I'll have to bother you with the request. Please change my e-mail address from jerry@cowtown.net to jerry37@netzero.net effective immediately.

Thanks much,

Jerry Mason

Little Billy and his Dad were down at the airport watching planes taking-off and landing.

Little Billy looks up to his Dad and says, "Dad, when I grow up I want to be a Pilot."

His Dad looks down at him and says, "You can't do both son."

Rose,

Worthless things to ponder:
Most class crests have a four digit dates 1959, 1960 etc.
From '65 to '86 crests had only 2 digits except for 1972 whichseems not to have any date.
Of course Year 2000 has all digits.

I am forwarding this also to several of the deep thinkers of the Class foranalysis.

If you wish to speak at Patti's Memorial Service, please keep it short (no short jokes), light and clean. That last comment was for Greg.

I'm doing OK. With love, Vic - (310) 378-2010

Patricia Ann Yoakum

Patti Yoakum, of 4303 W. 234th Place, Torrance, Ca. 90505, passed away the morning of 13 March of a heart attack. Patti was attended by her loving husband of 41 years.

Patti was the daughter of Virginia and Kellog Krebs and was born 20 November 1936, in Pasadena, Ca. The family moved to Palo Alto where Patti lived until she attended Colorado Women's College and Denver University in Colorado. After college, Patti was a dedicated Air Force wife, mother of two children and supported her husband and family through 22 years of military service. Patti was a member of the Torrance community for 23 years and she will be dearly remembered for her tremendous love for her family and friends and her truly generous and forgiving heart.

She is survived by her husband retired Colonel Victor Yoakum, daughter Susan, son Eric, mother-in -law Vivian Russel, sister-in-law Valerie Mobley, nieces Marcie Yoakum Notar and Vivian Roberts, nephews Vance Jr. and John Yoakum; her aunt Ruby Krebs, cousins Kenny and Jerry Krebs and Carolyn Krebs Carson, and many friends. Her parting has left a void filled with so much remembered joy, love and friendship shared.

A memorial service will be held in honor of Patti at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 20 March at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church 301 Avenue D at Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach, Ca.

Following the memorial service, a luncheon will be held at the residence. Please join us to celebrate Patti's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Patti's name to the American Heart Association.
