Sorry I missed the ski in. I promised last year I would make this year, so I am not gonna promise next year, I'll just be there. Anyhow, I don't work anymore, so I don't have a FAX number as the roster shows .. if you want to fix that. Does Miles Kaspar have an email? I have some SEA history I need to coordinate (I lie, he swears to it) with him. Take care.

All,
If you haven't seen this picture yet, I know you're going to enjoy it as much as I have. Read the history first before you open up the picture. Knowing the history helps to appreciate it.
===================
Through the viewfinder of his camera, Ensign John Gay could see the A/F18 drop from the sky as it headed toward the port side of the Aircraft Carrier Constellation at 1,000 feet. The pilot increases his speed to 750 mph, vapor flickering off the curved surfaces of the plane. At the precise moment of breaking the sound barrier, 200 yards form the carrier, a circular cloud formed arourd the Hornet. With the Pacific Ocean just 75 feet below the aircraft being rippled by the aircraft's pass, Gay hears the explosion of the sonic boom and snaped his camera shutter once.
"I clicked the same time I heard the boom and I knew I had it." What he had was a technically meticulous depiction of the sound barrier being broken on July 7, 1999, somewhere on the Pacific between Hawaii and Japan. Sports Illustrated, Brills Content, and Life ran the photo.
The photo recently took first prize in the science and technology division in the World Press Photo 2000 contest, which drew more than 42,000 entries worldwide.
Because Ensign Gay is a member of the military he was ineligible for the cash prize. "In the last few days, I've been getting calls from everywhere about it again. It's very humbling." Gay, 38, manages a crew of eight assigned to take intelligence photographs from the high-tech belly (TARPS POD) of an F-14 Tomcat. In July, Gay had been part of a Joint Task Force Exercise as the Constellation made its way to Japan.
Gay used his personal Nikon 90 S, set his 80-300 mm zoom lens on 300 mm, his shutter speed at 1/1000 of a second and the aperture at F5.6. "I put it on full manual," Gay said. "I tell young photographers who are into automatic everything, you aren't going to get that shot on auto. The plane is too fast. The camera can't keep up."
At sea level a plane had to exceed 741 mph to break the sound barrier. The change in pressure as the plane outruns all of the pressure and sound waves in front of it is heard on the ground as an explosion - the sonic boom. The pressure change condenses the water in the air as the jet passes these waves. Altitude, wind, speed, humidity, the shape and trajectory of the plane - all affect the breaking of the barrier. On July 7 everything was perfect. "You see vapor flicker around the plane. It gets bigger and bigger, then BOOM - it's instantaneous. One second the vapor cloud is there, the next it's gone."
Now, go ahead, open the picture. The Sound Barrier.

I'm in the process of trying to find out where our 'departed' classmates are buried. The Mortuary Officer at the Academy has sent me the gravesite locations for our 22 guys buried there, but I'd like to complete the list with the sites in other locations. Going to need help finding out where the other 15 are. Would appreciate hearing from anyone out there that might have participated in or attended a funeral (or Memorial Service), knows the address of a next of kin/children/parents/friends/etc. If I can at least get the town/city, I'll use whitepages or yellowpages .com to 'dig deeper'. Dick Kingman told me that Lovell is buried in Opp, AL; I understand that Molinelli was cremated and his ashes distributed to 15 friends (but he does have a headstone in a family plot in Pocatello,ID.
Since most of us are in a mode of doing a bit more travelling, I'm hoping that a consolidated list can be provided to all (or at least included as a part of the "Memorial Ceremony" booklet used at the Reunions), and used as appropriate.
I'm still planning to attend the mini SKI reunion in Feb. Hope I see you there.

Ace,
I have been talking to Jock about our various class roaters. He is volunteering to reconcile our class roster, your roster and the AOG e-mail for the class before he leaves the AOG in about a month. I told him that I sent you the most current e-mail list I had. I don't know if you have updated the class website yet but could you send him a copy of that corrected roster that I sent you? Also, I do not know if you can download your database to him or not but if you can, he will sit there with all three different rosters and make sure that agree, for at least one point in time.
Thus far, I've heard from Jerry, GJC Fries, Glaza, and you about skiing. They will be arriving on the 23-24th, and Jerry says that Ralph is coming. I am sure that greg will be here so we should have the makings of a good group. Along that line, the letter I sent to Jon McClure came back. I used the address labels that resulted from the reunion. What's the deal? Do you think I should re-send to him and if so, do you have a good mailing address for him?

A shepherd is herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand new SUV advances out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and a YSL tie, leans out of the window and asks our shepherd, "If I can tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?"
The shepherd looks at the yuppie, then at his peacefully grazing flock and calmly answers, "Sure! This I gotta see."
The yuppie parks the SUV, whips out his palm pilot, connects it to a cellphone, surfs to a NASA page on the Internet where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system, scans the area, opens up a database and some 60 Excel spreadsheets with complex formulas. Finally he prints out a 150 page report on his hi-tech miniaturized printer, turns to our shepherd and says: "You have here exactly 1,586 sheep!"
"This is correct. As agreed, you can take one of the sheep," says the shepherd. He watches the young man make a selection and bundle it into his SUV. Then he says, "If I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me my sheep back?"
"Okay, sounds fair," answers the young man.
"You are a consultant," says the shepherd, emphatically.
"This is correct, says the yuppie, "How did you know that?"
"Easy" answers the shepherd. "You turn up here although nobody called for you. You want to be paid for the answer to a question I already knew the answer to. And you don't know shit about my business because you took my dog."

Greetings all:
Dotty and I are finally home from our flying safari to Class of 60 Reunion. What a thrill to see all you great guys again.
Bruce Mosier put a bug in our heads about Graham Air Base at Marianna, FL. So after our family visit in Morrison CO and a three hour hop to Tulsa for another visit, we decided to work in a stop there on our way home to the Ft. Lauderdale area.
After some study, it looked like our old Aztec could do the 635 nm. trip with a reasonable fuel reserve if we could go direct. Looked like 7,000 feet cleared all the MOA's starting down in the Meridian area, so we filed. Saturday (21st) dawned rainy in Tulsa, but we got off about 0930. ATC was great--cleared direct. First 2 hours in cloud and rain, putting along about final approach speed for my old L-1011 (160 Kts.). Into sunshine in eastern Arkansas. Landed Marianna with almost an hour reserve left.
Met Bill Mosier and Sheriff John MacDaniels at the FBO. They confirm that a reunion is held there and promised to send info (which we will share when received). Bill had Bruce Mosier's card and remembered the visit. Sheriff John was a '58 grad of Marianna High School and remembered our days there. I told him about pulling into a gas station east of town in a rush to get back to base with gas gauge on zero. I asked for a quick gallon and was handed a cider jug of 'shine. He laughed and named the family owning the station; said they're still there. The buildings are now used for a school and home for retarded people . . . Well, weren't they always?
We learned that Marianna has a big Cowboy Action Shooting Club (Single Action Shooting Society), so there's our excuse to fly back for a weekend sometime soon.
Very nice people, and we will share reunion info ASAP. Seems a few instructors are still in the area--alive.
Home after a 2½ hour hop, unloaded, and rolled our trusty baby into her hangar. She ran almost 4,000 nm. On this trip without a burp. Good girl!
Had to dig out old logbooks before bedtime. Curiosity. Turns out I landed in Marianna 40 years and one day, and some 23,000 hours, after my first solo in a T-37 there. Instructor was Andy Bray (WWII P-47 driver) and I had 5:59 in the airplane and 24 landings before solo. Solo in the T-34 was about 5 weeks earlier.
This has been a real nostalgia trip for me. Strange feeling to taxi in past our old line shack. The ramp where rows of T-34s and -28s and -37s were lined up now sprouts grass through the cracks. But the huge trees full of Spanish moss are still there. It's still recognizable and has a feeling. People, faces. Some of you we just saw. Others missing. I flashed on the opening scenes of the movie "Twelve O'clock High", where the old Ops Officer rides his bike across the grass grown field in England.
Anyhow, we'll share what info we get about Graham. Many of you were there so maybe there will be some interest.
Keep well all of you. And many thanks for the generous and warm reception you gave to a "lost sheep".
Sincerely, Jerry and Dotty
P.S. Sheriff Johnny already replied, so here's his answer:
HELLO JERRY:
I HOPE YOU AND YOUR WIFE HAD A SAFE FLIGHT HOME.
I MADE CONTACT WITH MR. CALUDE REESE OF, 4133 BRYAN STREET , GREENWOOD, FLORIDA. MR. REESE WAS ONE OF THE INSTRUCTORS AT GRAHAM.
MR. REESE SAID FOR YOU TO CONTACT EDWARD A. HOLMES AT 2975 PARK ST., MARIANNA, FL. 32447 AND HE WOULD SEE THAT YOU WERE NOTIFIED OF THE "NEXT" GRAHAM REUNION.
MAYBE--- JUST MAYBE-- I WILL HAVE COMPLETED THE J-3 PROJECT AND YOU AND YOUR WIFE CAN TAKE ME AROUND THE PATCH.
TAKE CARE, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.

JOHNNY MACK AND MELLIE

Ace, I know that sending this e-mail to you will gain lots of coverage, so here goes.
Since this was my first reunion after 40 years of being "out of the loop" it may have made a bigger impression on me than for those who have attended every 5 years or so. Also those of us who have made a career in the military and/or live around other classmates may see this last reunion slightly less of a "life altering event". For me, it was a peak experience and one I will always remember with gratitude and pride.
In my life's travels, I have worked and played with many folks but the quality and values of our classmates (and spouses) is by far the very best! I had a wonderful time and felt truly accepted as if we were just graduated. It was a highly successful time because you and so many others invested your efforts so well. My special thanks to you, Jim Glaza, Rosie, Jock, Wayne and Andi. I don't mean to omit anyone but want to keep this note manageable.
The planned events were great (even if we got cut out of the golf tourney) but the best part was the non stop (for me) reconnecting with such special guys and gals. I now know what I've missed all these years and I guess time and distance have helped me better focus.
Thanks for the great pics on the web site. Ain't technology wonderful!
All the best to you and to each classmate!
Bill

Charlie,
It is hard to express the emotions, feelings, memories that were evoked by being at the 40th. Of course, beating Navy was the icing! But the main event was being with the Class of '60 again. My wife and children now understand a bit better why being of "'60" has been a point of pride for me all these years. They were impressed by my classmates and how close everyone was after such long separations.
My thanks to all for making my retirement such a great experience. Andi and Jock (and his staff) were super. My old roomies, GJC and Andi did me proud. I could not have had a more meaningful ceremony or a more important group of people with whom to share it.

OK, folks. Egg on my face. I didn't realize (since I hadn't tried--and I told you that) the truly complex nature of how to share photos on the Shutterfly site. Apparently, I will have to store the photos there (working on that--it's a large file and I'm getting thrown off the site before it will take them) and then invite (by email) any of you who give your email addresses to access the file.
In the meantime, I've had some very useful suggestions from Dottie Westby and Jerry Farquhar about the problem. It may be that ultimately I'll have to burn a CD and send it to anyone who wants one, particularly if the site is not geared to the huge file size.
More when we can figure out the best way to go.
Sorry for the confusion,

Hi Guys!
I retired from Delta Airlines 6 years ago. Lately I've restored a 38 year-old helicopter and am learning to fly it. Turns out that the maintenance is so heavy that I may just qualify for an A&P.
Had a bout of colon cancer 3 years ago. It metastasized to my liver and my lung. I was on the wrong end of a big survival ratio number, but 3 surgeries seem to have done the trick as I am doing well and there are no signs of anything bad remaining.
Sorry that I will miss the reunion. We had made a commitment over a year ago that we can't get out of. Best wishes and regards to all.

Yo Ace,
Here we are, back home after the best reunion ever! You, Andi, and all concerned did a marvelous job. I was on the website trying to make sure I'm "on the list"(class roster, that is)...couldn't help noticing I didn't make it. Unless my alphabet has left me, I should be somewhere between Collier and Cook. Are you the one to talk to about that?
More later...It was great to see you.
Buck Congdon
BUCK, MY PRUFUSE APOLOGIES. HAD ALL YOUR DATA BUT FIND I FUMBLE-THUMBS ON THE KEY BOARD MORE AND MORE AS I GET OLDER. YOU'RE THERE NOW. GREAT TO SEE YOU AT THE R40 ALSO.
REGARDS, ACE

Ace,
Because we travel a lot we are often slow in replying to emails - talk about snail mail! If anyone wants to send an email to Frank or Eve, use:
donsgd@dnvr.uswest.net,
or: evemayberry@hotmail.com
We'll get it at one of those addresses.

A couple of quick reunion notes:
I have been a tad slow getting stuff finalized. Everyone should have hard copy of reunion registration form and updated schedule of events by 5 August.
Check the reunion site and get your reunion merchandise ordered ASAP.
Football tickets are ordered on the registration form - yes, you can order extra ones. Seating in the upper west stands, to the south of the Press Box.
Keep up the good work, Ace - great site.
Check Six -

Ace, I just reviewed the class e-mail list and noticed that we now have pictures. Thanks for this addition and also the indicator of "gone but not forgotten" where we have lost one of our class. Seeing all our "downed mates" at once left a strong impression on me.
Again, my thanks for your contributions to our "class memory".
Bill

Hi Charlie,
It was a most pleasant surprise to receive your e-mail. Having just returned from a wonderful family reunion this afternoon, I started to go through the various messages and found the one from you. Maybe the years have added a little emotion to things - 4th of July - or not. Nonetheless, it made for warm fuzzys!
You and I have been out voted. I suggested that we have another get together at my home as part of the reunion, but all the others felt that there were too many other things that had to worked in. So be it, some of us will just have to have a couple of extra shots to help us relive some of our own special times.
We will have adequate time to get caught up on things while at the reunion, but I'll just say that life is good. All of us have a bump or two (Mountains?) that must be navigated, but on balance, I've been blessed.
Please stay in touch. You are doing a wonderful job on the class web page and all of us appreciate you efforts. Best to you and yours.
George

Ace,
I never did track down "Bullet" Bob Baker. I was hoping someone at the Academy would contact the State Department or CIA.
Linda and I are moving to San Diego. We have a buyer for our house here and will close on 28 July and fly to San Diego 29 July. We are tired of the winters and want to live on the same coast as our daughters and grand daughters in Washington State. We don't know where we will live permanently in San Diego, housing prices are out of sight.
I have a job as the Executive Director of the Naval Helicopter Association. My mail address will be, P.O. Box 181800, Coronado, CA 92178. My work phone will be, (619) 435-7139.
I plan on being at our reunion. I made reservations at the Radisson for 5-8 October. Hope all is well with you and you are having a good summer. Watch out for those sharks in the Gulf!
Howie

Subject: 40th Class Reunion

Hi Andi,
Sometimes Bobbi and I do nothing of significance, socially, for two or three months at a time. Then all the fun stuff comes along at the same time. Such is the case with our 40th class reunion. On the exact same days of our 40th reunion my high school class is holding a reunion down in Kerrville (near Austin). Also, on the same weekend, our next door neighbors have invited us to join them in Albuquerque for the annual hot air balloon festival.
Since I obviously can't be in three places at the same time, I had to make a choice. I have chosen to attend my high school class reunion. There are a couple of reasons for my choosing the high school reunion over our USAFA reunion. First, the high school reunion was scheduled and I committed to attending before the date was set for our 40th USAFA reunion. Equally important is that I attended high school at Wiesbaden American High School from 1952 through my graduation in 1955. There were only 32 "brats" in my class, so we were a very close group. Most of us completely lost track of one another after we returned to the States following graduation. Then a few years ago a miracle happened. Along came computers and the Internet. Some enterprising WHS graduates formed an alumni organization that has been quite successful at finding a lot of graduates. Of my class of 32 about half of us are back in contact with one another via e-mail.
Choosing between the high school and the USAFA reunion was a classic "approach - approach" conflict. (Philosophy/Logic 101, remember, Andi?) With only eight or ten of us expected to attend the high school reunion, my presence would be missed more at the high school reunion than at the USAFA reunion.
This is a long way of saying that I'm very sorry I won't be able to see all you guys in Colorado Springs in October. I felt like I should tell somebody why I wasn't going to make it, and you seemed like the most logical one to talk to. Have a great time at the "40th" and have one for me.

Thank you.

Classmates!!!!!
Can you believe 40 years? I had dinner with Ken Alnwick Monday the other evening at an Anchorage restuarant. As we were leaving, I looked up at a mirror and saw two older gentlemen in relaxed fit Jeans and loose shirts walking at a sedate pace out of the establishment - yes, Ken and I! It was hard NOT to remember the cool young dudes we were when we took leave of USAFA . . . it doesn't seem all that long ago. Our personalities haven't changed. The feelings of kinship and of being classmates haven't changed.
I cherish the friendships and the experiences we of '60 shared, as well as the things those formative years at USAFA enabled us to take on as life has progressed. I wish you all well today and as we head for the reunion in October. It is good to be a member of the Class of '60.
Dean

After 17 years in Albuquerque, Camille and I are moving to a retirement site in Marble Falls, Tx. Please don't rush to visit us yet or you will only have a concrete slab as your bed and 5 pecan trees as your canopy. We are inviting visitors as soon as the house is completed, probably in early September. I'll let you know the progress at our 40th. Even if some of you guys don't remember me (or don't care), golfers pay attention. Our new address will be 20 Augusta Dr., Marble Falls, TX 78654. Your global positioners will spot us about 40 miles west of Austin, TX inside a gated golf course community in the Texas hill country.
As transients we do have access to computers and e-mail. Our current e-mail address until 26 Jun is dsweigart@earthlink.net. Then, until we move into our new home, our address is jcampbell@thegateway.net. When it comes to cyberspace, I am also nulli secundus.
