Class of 1970
40 th REUNION
Reunion Announcement Letter
Date: 29 December 2009
Hello Class of ’70,
We are in the initial kickoff phase for our 40Th reunion. We expect it to be the biggest and best yet. Since we are all getting a little “long in the teeth”, this reunion may well be one of our last chances to reconnect with each other en masse. The reunion is 29 Sep-3Oct, 2010 for the AF-Navy game. We will have a tentative schedule posted on the Class Reunion link at the AOG site (www.usafa.org). For arrival planning purposes, you golfers need to be here for the tournament on Thursday morning.
A major part of the reunion is the dedication of our Class Gift-the Heritage Trail SEA Pavilion located directly north of Doolittle Hall (AOG). It will be a great addition to the Academy’s heritage. You can view a “fly-through” of the memorial on our class web page at the AOG site. It will be a fitting tribute to all those graduates who served and supported the Vietnam conflict. As many of you are painfully aware the economic downturn has reduced charitable donations, causing us to be significantly short of our fundraising goal. Those of you who have not yet given, or who have but could provide additional pledges, please consider a significant donation to this project. We still need about $400,000 to make the concept a reality in time for the dedication at our reunion. Donations and pledges can be made either through the AOG or the USAFA Endowment (usafaendowment.org). Add the words “Class of 1970 Gift Donation”.
Your committee is beginning the detailed planning required and would appreciate any support you can offer, particularly as squadron liaison reps. My goal is to communicate often, primarily through the Class Reunion link at the AOG web site and through e-mails. I encourage inputs about alternate activities, spouse/guest activities, contact info for “lost souls” and non-graduate classmates, and suggestions for special guests.
We need your immediate help in three ways:
- Are you entertaining the possibility of attending, and, if so, how many in your party?
- Would you stay at the Reunion hotel, and what day would you arrive (Wed, Thurs, Friday)?
- Would you consider volunteering as a Squadron Liaison rep to aid in our communications task?
Those of you receiving this letter by snail mail have no e-mail address on file. So please respond by e-mail or phone to me (gawbo@comcast.net) so we can update our contact roster.
Again, more volunteers are greatly desired, particularly from those of you on the Front Range. I hope to post the committee meeting dates on the Class web site. The meetings are open to all. Initially we will have a working lunch every other Tuesday at 1230, starting on January 5. Meeting minutes will also be posted. Suffice it to say I am deeply honored to be part of this committee. With your help we can make this 40th Reunion the best yet. I hope you are excited about the possibilities available to us. Communication will play a key role. Please feel free to call or e-mail me with any ideas, advice, or cautions (Sooner is better than later). Thanks for the opportunity to serve.
