A requiem mass was celebrated for Capt. Richard T. Mathews in the Catholic Cadet Chapel on 15 April, 1967. Capt Mathews, a 1960 Graduate and President of the Academy Association of Graduates died Saturday after a lengthy illness.

The Captain had been Alumni Secretary to the Academy Superintendent, Lt. Gen. Thomas S. Moorman, from 1965 until his retirement from the Air Force on Nov. 30, 1966. He was 30 years old.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marjorie Mathews of Colorado Springs, and three children: Angela Kathrin, six; Mark Winslow, five; and Christienne Elizabeth, one year. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard S. Mathews, live in Quincy, Ill.

Captain Mathews was presented the Legion of Merit, the nation's second highest peacetime award, a month before his retirement. He was honored for his exceptionally meritorious service as executive secretary and president of the Academy's Association of Graduates.

Captain Mathews was aide to the dean of the faculty from 1963 to 1965. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for his work during this period. A rated aircraft pilot, he graduated from the Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant on June 8, 1960.

As a cadet at the Academy, Captain Mathews was a group material officer and made the Superintendent's Merit List in his third year. He was a member of the Cadet Catholic Choir, the Cadet Ring Committee, and the staff of the Talon cadet magazine.
