As I'm sure all of you already know, the Falcon/Goat game will be the featured ESPN Thursday night game tomorrow night. Since I have been busy cleaning up the yard from Ivan's visit and also have an elective hernia surgery scheduled for early tomorrow morning, this will really be a short message. The game is scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m. CDT Thursday night after the ESPN program starts at 6:30 p.m. CDT. For those Falcon fans in the local Emerald Coast area, Angler's will be happy to welcome you to watch
the game and provide you with your favorite beverages and food. Since everyone can watch at home (if you have electricity, as most do) I doubt that there will be a large crowd at Angler's Sports Bar on Okaloosa Island. They survived Ivan with little to no damage even though they are on the Gulf.
We had about ten fans that watched Utah beat the Falcons 49-35 last Saturday at Angler's. Sorry, that I missed a preview of that game, but it was just as well as I expected Utah to win by a 31-14 score or close to that. I was pleasantly surprised along with I assume were many of you by the fact that the Falcons were able to score 35 points against a very good Utah squad in Salt Lake. Shaun Carney is beginning to make believers out of a lot of fans. This young man can pass and currently has a 70% completion
rate. He is also a pretty good runner. One important outcome of the Utah game is that Darnell Stephens was injured and may not play against Navy. Anthony Butler (a C1C) and Edward Moss (a C3C) should pick up any slack at halfback (or WB as Stephens is designated). Matt Ward was found not guilty of the steroid charge, but so far I haven't seen that he has been put back on the football squad.
We all know that Navy defeated the Falcons last year by a 25-28 as Kyle Eckel rambled for 176 yards from his fullback position in the Middie option attack. He is a senior and at 240 pounds he is a stud who will get his yards again this year, but one would hope that the Falcon defense might hold him to around 100 yards. If they key too much on Eckel, the Middies will go to their QB, Aaron Polanco, a senior who at 6'0" and 208 pounds can run impressively as well. The Middies do have a weakness in their
kicking game so look for some breaks there--with perhaps a blocked kick or so. It's time for bedtime, so I'll end this by suggesting that it will be a close, hard-fought game that will end up as an Air Force victory by a score of 28-20. This morning's line had Navy favored by 1 and 1/2 points.
One final tidbit is that next week's game on Saturday, 10/9, with New Mexico at USAFA will be televised by Sports West at around 5:00 p.m. CDT. Angler's should be able to pick up that game with their satellite capability. New Mexico plays Utah this Saturday, 10/2. More on that after the Navy game.

This is going to be really short, gang, as everyone along the Gulf Coast is already too aware, we have Hurricane Ivan looking at us head on with 160+ mph winds currently. The forecasters say that it should drop in intensity a bit as it hits some dry air soon. Let's hope so. I'm likely out of Dodge tomorrow afternoon for who knows how long.
The Falcons scored some points Saturday as they defeated the Eastern Washington Eagles by a 42-20 score. Shaun Carney looked pretty good as he was 10 for 15 with 2 TD's and 139 yards passing. He also had 62 yards rushing. Dan Shaffer had 131 yards rushing and Darnell Stephens chipped in 41 yards rushing. Stephens had one rushing TD and also a TD from a pass reception. Thus, the above trio easily made my 200+ prediction of rushing yards for the three of them look good as they totaled 234 yards rushing. Adam
Fitch got some playing time at QB and led the Falcons on a long drive and TD in the first quarter to go up 21-0. His second attempted drive was not as successful and Fitch had some fumbles in the fourth quarter. Still, he got some actual game time as Coach DeBerry works to have an alternative to Carney in case the latter falters. The Falcon defense left a lot to be desired as they gave up 20 points and 293 passing yards to the Eagles. The defense will have to do much better to keep the team in contention
in games this week with UNLV and next week with Utah.
UNLV is 0-2 so far, but they are a much better team than that record indicates as they have lost to two Top 25 teams in the form of Tennessee (17-42) who was #14 last week and to Wisconsin (3-18) who was #21 last week. Both games were on the road for UNLV. We play them in Las Vegas this Saturday at 7:00 p.m.PDT (5:00 p.m. CDT). The game will not be on TV! ESPN in their wisdom took down the UNLV/AFA game that they had listed under Game Plan last week. No explanation and none expected. UNLV has a very good
defensive team and can score. I hope I'm wrong, but I expect a Falcon loss to UNLV in the area of 14-24.

To be blunt, the Falcons were creamed, canned and sent back to the practice field last Saturday by the Cal Bears in a 56-14 Cal victory. This Saturday should provide a more pleasant outcome as the Eastern Washington Eagles from the Big Sky Conference (a Division 1AA League) come to Colorado Springs to test the Falcons. The game will not be on TV, but you can follow the game on the Internet if you choose by going to the Air Force Sports Website at 1:05 p.m. CDT. The week after the loss to California saw several
news items of interest. C4/C Shaun Carney was reaffirmed as the starting QB for this next game. C/2C Adam Fitch who just returned to full time practice mode a bit over two weeks ago is now listed as the number 2 QB and Andy Gray is now number 3. It was also announced this week that Coach DeBerry now has a five year extension to his coaching contract that will keep him as the Falcon coach through 2009. Meanwhile, Linebacker Overton Spence was found innocent of abusing steroids by a court-martial and has been
reinstated to the Falcon football squad. RB Matthew Ward who was impressive last year as a punt and kickoff returner has pled innocent to similar steroid charges and faced a court-martial this week, the result of which have yet to be announced.
Returning to this Saturday's game against Eastern Washington, we should be aware that the Eagles also lost their first game of the 2004 season. They were beaten by Nicholls State by a score of 37-14 on the latter's home field in Thibodauz, Louisiana, on 9/4. The game started shortly after torrential rains at the playing field, and the Eagles had 6 turnovers (four TO's in the first half). Nicholls State is also a I AA school and runs the option offense. They rolled up 246 rushing yards and 113 passing yards
in defeating the Eagles. Eastern Washington's QB is Meyer and he completed 16 of 27 for 122 yards in the game. Two RB's, Witherspoon and Washington, rushed for 88 yards with 19 carries between them. The top Eagle receiver was Kimble who had 9 receptions for 66 yards.
Against Cal, the Falcons gave up a total of 573 yards while gaining only 271 total yards for their offensive total. QB Carney had 18 carries for 75 rushing yards and 89 yards passing with 9 of 15 passing; he passed for 1 TD and suffered 1 interception (on the Cal 9 yard line in the first half). The Falcons had only 56 total offense in the second half against Cal, and Carney had -5 yards rushing in the second half. Air Force went into half-time behind Cal by only 14-21. Cal outscored Air Force 35-0 in the
second half; obviously the Cal coaching staff adjusted their defense for the unbalanced line the Air Force used with some success in the first half. Injuries were several from the Cal game. Starting RG Curtis Grantham has likely been lost for the season due to a fractured leg (left fibula). Other injuries included WR Alec Messerall - elbow strain, WR Greg Kirkwood - hip pointer, FB Adam Cole, torn knee ligament, NG Russ Mitscherling - groin strain, and CB David Conley - neck strain. All injured players except
RG Grantham are listed as possible but questionable for this Saturday's game.
Given all the above discussion, I'll make the prediction that the Falcons will roll over Eastern Washington by a score of 38-7 on Saturday. Look for QB Carney, FB Dan Shaffer and RB Darnell Stephens to pile up over 200 rushing yards among the three of them against the Eagles. A victory should reinvigorate the Falcons and prepare them for a trip to Las Vegas to play the UNLV Rebels on September 18 at 9:00 p.m. CDT. The USAFA/UNLV game is currently listed to be on the ESPN Game Plan shekel and will be available
for viewing at Angler's Sports Bar on Okaloosa Island for Ft. Walton Beach area fans. I apologize for any confusion caused for those on the East Coast that attempted to watch the Cal game on ESPN 2 last Saturday. I left on vacation on August 26 and didn't return until September 4 after the game ended. While I was gone, ESPN evidently decided to put the Virginia/Temple game on ESPN 2 in the East rather than show the USAFA/Cal game. Sometimes these TV schedules can be frustrating. With that in mind, we'll
check and double-check that 9:00 p.m. CDT for the Las Vegas game on 9/18 and will keep you updated. The 9:00 p.m. time came from the Air Force Sports Website, but ESPN is currently showing what appears to be a 6:00 p.m. CDT starting time for the very same game.

This will be short, but the news from Colorado today was too shocking to not pass it along. The news about the starting QB on 9/4 may just be enough to persuade you to show up at Angler's at 11:00 a.m. CDT to watch the game rather than watch it at home on ESPN 2. Anyone curious yet? Coach DeBerry announced yesterday (Tuesday) that he will be starting a freshman by the name of Shaun Carney of North Olmstead, Ohio, at QB. This will be the first time a freshman has started an AFA game since Dee Dowis did so
against BYU in 1986 and that was not the opening game of the season, nor do I recall that BYU was ranked in the top 15 football teams in the nation at that time. Perhaps there are some that might see Coach DeBerry's decision as tantamount to a move made out of desperation. I would beg to differ. If there is one characteristic of DeBerry we can count on, it is that he does not make moves out of desperation at the beginning of the season.
Young Cadet Carney does not come without a resume. He played at the Prep School last year against some tough junior college teams. He was a three year letterman at St. Edwards High School in suburban Cleveland prior to that. As a starter in high school he was 24-2 and was the starter ahead of Troy Smith who is expected to be the backup QB at Ohio State this fall. Carney can run and he can pass. He had 3,849 yards and 30 TD's passing while a starter in high school. Carney is 5' 9" and 190 pounds which
probably explains why he didn't end up at a Big Ten school. His brother, Mark, is the QB coach at the Univ. of Richmond (VA).
A quote by Coach DeBerry in today's Denver Post is instructive: "Certainly, we realize that he will probably make some mistakes in the game. But I'm confident that he has the ability and the confidence to overcome any mistakes." DeBerry was also quoted as saying: "Shaun brings a great deal of poise and confidence, and he really makes plays." Carney beat out C2C Andy Gray during a three hour scrimmage last Saturday when he threw 2 TD's during four possessions and had one interception that
went through the receiver's arms. Andy Gray also threw 2 TD's during the scrimmage and had only one turnover when he fumbled during a red zone drill. Gray accepted his position as backup QB. He said that he still wants to start and that he'll work to be the best backup QB in the nation. He plans to continue to prepare himself to play games. Meanwhile, C2C Adam Fitch, who helped defeat Northwestern last year when Chance Harridge was thrown out of the game, started his participation in full contact practice
with the team this past Monday. Fitch had been the projected starting QB this fall before he rupturing an Achilles tendon during spring practice.
Let's discuss the opposing team a bit. They return seven starters on the offensive side to include QB Aaron Rodgers and three senior receivers in the form of Geoff McArthur, Jonathan Giesel and Burl Toler. Rodgers had 215 completions in 349 attempts (61.6%) for 2,903 yards, 19 TD's and 5 Interceptions. McArthur caught 85 passes for 1,504 yards and 10 TD's to rank second nationally last year. Giesel was the team's leading receiver in 2002 and caught seven passes in the Cal defeat of Southern Cal by a 34-31
score in 3 OT's for Southern Cal's only defeat of the 2003 season. Giesel suffered a stress fracture of his foot in that game and did not play in the remaining 8 games on Cal's schedule. He was replaced by Burl Toler who ended with 48 receptions for 609 yards and 3 TD's. Cal even has a senior backup QB (Reggie Robertson) who passed for 62 completions of 99 attempts (62.6%) and 9 TD's with 3 interceptions.
If that were not enough to cause concern, Cal led the Pac 10 last year in rushing. Their starting tailback this year, J.J.Arrington, was a backup last year; but he led the league with a 5.7 per carry average as he had a total of 607 yards in 107 rushes. The Cal defense returns nine starters from last year to include everyone but one defensive end and the nose tackle. Thus, C4C Carney will face a veteran and talented secondary to counter any passing attack that the Falcons might attempt.
It could be a long morning/afternoon for the Falcons unless they luck out and find a California team that is overconfident and plays below their potential. I wouldn't count on it. Expect a Cal victory on the order of 35-14 over the Falcons.
I'll be out of town for the next ten days so there will be no more updates from this source until after the Cal game. The following week on September 11, Eastern Washington visits Falcon Country and should provide a typical Divison 1A battle that the Falcons will win rather handily. After that, it is UNLV in Las Vegas on 9/18 and Utah in Salt Lake City on 9/25 for Utah's Homecoming Game. Those games will tell the tale as to how competitive the Falcons will be in the MWC in 2004. One or both games may be available
by satellite TV, but nothing is definite as yet. We'll let you know as soon as anything is announced.

The time has come again for me to invite you and loved ones/pals to the sand and surf version of the mini-ski, the "Triple R" -- also known as the Redneck Riveria Reunion -- to be held on Friday, 23 July in the party room at the SeaSpray Gondoiniums on HY 98 between Ft. Walton Beach and Destin adjacent to Beasley Park, site of the FWB welcome center. My family gathers at SeaSpray about this time every year, and this is the best way I know to get together with some of my old Air Commando buddies and
'60 classmates. We'll start at about 1830 and start winding things down about 2030. Come early if you like for a swim in the pool or the delightful waters of the Gulf (assuming the sharks are looking the other way).

There are only 14 days left until the June 30 transfer of sovereignty in Iraq, we are less than five months from a presidential election, and the start of summer is only five days away. Yes, it must be time to look for a diversion from really serious things. After all, the NBA playoffs have ended with a surprise new champion in the Detroit Pistons, Tampa Bay is the current winner of the NHL's Stanley Cup after their series win just over a week ago, and the baseball season is about 40% complete. Obviously,
it's time to TALK SOME FOOTBALL!
For those of you that have had other things on your mind, let me bring you up to date. The Falcon footballers open their 2004 season on Saturday, September 4, by hosting the California Golden Bears before a national ESPN 2 TV audience at 10:00 a.m. MST. It ain't going to be an easy game, gang. The Cal Bears are ranked 11th nationally by The Sporting News Preseason Football Magazine and 17th nationally by the Street & Smith's Preseason Football Magazine. The Bears return 7 starters on offense to include
QB Aaron Rodgers (215 of 349 for 61.6%, 2,903 yards, 19 Td's and 5 interceptions) and 9 starters on defense. Meanwhile, the Falcons return only 3 starters each on both offense and defense for a total of 6. In addition, the expected starting QB, C2C Adam Fitch ruptured his Achilles tendon on his right leg and had surgery at the Academy on April 2nd; his recovery is expected to take 4 to 6 months.
C2C Andy Gray moved up to become the expected starting QB, and he had very little game time other than a few plays against Army in 2003 where he did not complete a pass. He returned in 2003 from a 2 year Mormon Mission, so he does have some maturity and does have passing ability along with running ability. C3C Luke Ewing is the backup QB currently. Coach DeBerry did not have the traditional Blue and Silver Spring Scrimmage this spring, probably due to his not wanting to risk any more QB injuries. More on all
this later in August.
Be aware that the AFA/Navy game this fall in Colorado Springs was moved from a Saturday game to a Thursday night game on September 30 which will be televised nationally on ESPN. Also, be aware that the AFA/Wake Forest game planned for September 11 at USAFA was switched to later this decade (2009) when it will be played at Wake Forest. Eastern Washington, of the 1-AA Big Sky Conference will provide the opposition on September 11 at USAFA. Also, be aware that TCU will not join the Mountain West Conference until
2005; in fact, the Horned Frogs will play no MWC teams at all in 2004 as they finish out their last year in Conference USA.
This is probably enough for one night/early morning. Stand by for more later this summer.

Hi Ace,
Have recently completed (after three months work) an html version of the entire Behind Light's Illusion series on CD, along with the updated website. All the books were revised and Book Four - Light is a new edition. Book Three - Electromagnetism has a major overhaul. Am sending a CD to you. It is packaged and will be mailed tomorrow.
Have had a lot of insight on the nature of light and was able to verify most of it. This changed some of what I had in books three and four and caused me to write a lot more on the new things that resulted. Consequently, light is more easily explained now
and makes more sense than it did. Please post this whole e-mail on the class website (when and if you have time) so the guys know. Thanks.

I already know that some of you want it and have packaged a CD for each of you which will be mailed tomorrow. commemorative 37 cent stamp honoring the Air Force Academy's 50 years of
service to the nation was unveiled at a ceremony on 1 April ( I don't think
it was an April fool joke!). I plan on buying a few tomorrow. We sure
are getting old...

Editors of Checkpoints:
Just received my Winter 2004 copy of Checkpoints and have enjoyed the
articles and especially the class news. As a member of the Class of 1960,
this is one of the few ways of keeping up with my classmates and the latest
at the Academy and AOG, USAFAtoday notwithstanding.
A comment:
I note the article in this issue on the first African American graduates of
the Academy in 1963. The Class of '60 was the group that ran the summer
training for that class and I do remember at least one of the cadets
profiled in the article as he was in my summer training squadron. There is
no question they were unique individuals deserving of their recognition as
Pathfinders. They are entirely deserving of this recognition.
However, I would suggest you also profile the "roles" of other ethnic
minorities at the Academy. Perhaps I have a self serving interest in this as
I believe I am the first non-white to graduate (unless there is a member of
the Class of '59 who can claim this dubious title). I am Asian American,
specifically of Japanese descent. In my class there were two others by
surname that could also be recognized in this sense as well: Don Almanzar
and Gerald DeLaCruz. I do know that in the class of '61 we have Hector
Negroni and I also believe there was at least one cadet of Chinese ancestry
as well as another Japanese American from Hawaii. And in that same class of
'63 was a cadet by the name of Warren Nogaki who was from New Jersey. I
think there was a Japanese American from Hawaii in the Class of '59 but he
was gone by the time I entered at Lowry AFB in 1956.
I do need to comment that during my four years at USAFA, I encountered no
particular issues of racism and felt completely accepted within the USAFA
community of cadets and officers. I suffered the same hazards of Doolie
summer and academic stress as all the others of my class. While on active
duty I again did not encounter overt examples of racism or bias, at least
within the ranks of junior officers, etc, that I served with.
I do believe that while gender issues have consumed most of the press during
the most recent times, specific commentary about ethnic groups can be very
illuminating as well. While the ideal would be that race/ethnicity at the
Academy be a non issue, the reality is that in our society at large, race
and gender matter. As leaders in the USAF, the graduates need to be totally
aware of these matters.

Despite how you may have personally felt about the issue, there was a good
logical reason for removing the Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama
Supreme Court building.
You cannot post things like "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit
Adultery", and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges
and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.

There is a USAFA grads site devoted to boards where all grads can comment,
discuss and talk about current issues, etc concerning the Academy. It is not
officially connected with the AOG or the Academy but is being run by
graduates and has membership of a wide span of graduates ranging from our
class to the class of 2002. The membership has been rapidly growing in the
past couple of days although it remains to be seen how many will eventually
register. I have found it to be interesting and informative. The web address
